Wimbledon Tournament History
Steeped in over 130 years of history, Wimbledon has developed a rich and diverse heritage of the years. Since the first Wimbledon tournament in 1877, The Championships have played host to some of Tennis most memorable matches. Many Wimbledon Records still stand today and are considered as some of the best achievements in the game of Tennis.
Up until 1968, when the open era was introduced in to world Tennis, only the top ranked amateurs could play in the tournament. However, both amateurs and professionals have been eligible to play in this prestigious tournament since 1968, the year in which Rod Laver won the third of his four Mens Wimbledon Singles titles.
